Editorial Policy
Last updated: June 9, 2026
Our content exists to help people handle a private sale correctly. That only works if it's accurate and honest. This policy explains how we research and maintain it.
We use primary, official sources
State requirements are based on primary government sources — state DMV, Department of Revenue, and Secretary of State pages and forms — and federal sources such as the NHTSA odometer rule. We link to the official source on every state page so you can verify it yourself.
We don't fabricate anything
We hold ourselves to a strict standard. We never invent:
- Reviews, ratings, or testimonials.
- Usage statistics or customer counts.
- Professional credentials or claims of legal expertise.
- Form numbers, statutes, or official links.
If we can't confirm a detail from an authoritative source, we say so or mark it for verification rather than guessing.
We flag uncertainty
Some state rules are genuinely nuanced — they vary by county, by transaction type, or by the age and price of the vehicle. Where the rule is situational or our confidence is lower, we say so plainly and point you to the official source to confirm before you sign.
We review and update
Government forms, fees, and procedures change. We review our state pages and guides periodically and update the "last updated" dates accordingly. Despite this, requirements can change between reviews, which is why every page reminds you to confirm with the official source.
This is information, not legal advice
Bill of Sale Generator is not a law firm. Our content is general educational information to help you understand the process — it is not legal advice and not a substitute for a licensed attorney or your state's DMV. See our Legal Disclaimer.
Corrections welcome
If you find an error or an out-of-date requirement, we want to fix it. Email guptaaryan583@gmail.com with the details and a source if you have one, and we'll review it promptly.
